Birthday Giveaway #3

I have to say I am pretty excited about this week’s giveaways for Friday, June 17th – Thursday, June 23rd. It is all about Nature Study and some sweet discounts! Therefore, this post is going to be short and sweet. Here is the giveaway and entry form and a rundown of the birthday discounts!

Giveaway #3

Giveaway #3 is a special Nature Study Bundle, which includes Exploring Nature with Children: A Complete Year-Long Curriculum, by Lynn Seddon + A set of 12 PrismaColor Pencils! Here is an excerpt from a review I wrote about her curriculum.

“Lynn Seddon’s new Nature Study Curriculum, ‘Exploring Nature with Children: A Complete Year-Long Curriculum.‘ is quickly becoming one of my favorite nature study resources. I think a big part of it is that I know she has lived this out. She wrote a guest post for me about a year ago about ‘Playing with Watercolors and blogs at Raising Little Shoots, where she regularly posts pictures of her children walking about in England, where they live, exploring nature, discovering new delights, and responding beautifully with skilled paintings and notebook entries. I see the joy on her children’s faces with each one of their discoveries. It is beautiful, but it is also real, as all beautiful things are.”  (A snippet from my ‘Exploring Nature with Children’ review.)

We love nature study! Our favorite nature study was this winter studying the birds. We just hung feeders out and observed. Every time we saw a new bird we would look it up in our field guide. We also read the Burgess bird book. It was easy, fun and we learned a lot.

I love my husband’s watercolor paintings when we do nature study. So, he patiently is teaching me and the kids some tips. Flowers are my favorite to identify and draw.

My favorite nature study experience was coming upon an alligator sunning itself on a log at our local wildlife refuge. We were able to sit down and sketch at leisure. And there were beautiful water hyacinths blooming everywhere, so we took some blooms and pressed them in our nature notebooks.

Thanks for the giveaway and discount.

I haven’t had experience with Nature study before, but would be interested in learning about how it is used on a day to day basis with the kids. I loved nature walks as a child. My 3rd grade teacher would take us on one every week. So much exploring and seeing neat things as a kid. Thanks for the opportunity!

Our most recent successful nature study was when my daughter found a praying mantis that had found it’s way into our pool. After rescuing, we studied him and then let him go in the garden to feast on our aphids. We did see him fly away so we knew he was okay. It made my daughter’s day. I have seen some of Lynn’s journal entries. They are so lovely. I can only hope to nature journal like that one day.

Nature study is the area in which I most want to grow. I feel like I’m doing fairly well in other areas, but lacking the most in the area of nature study. We do sketch from our nature guides and I had even set aside Friday afternoons to go on nature walks. But looking back, those nature walks rarely occurred. That appointed time was often filled with catch up work or just life stuff. I think I need to build in more buffer time & protect that time set aside for nature study. But I also would greatly benefit with some sort of guide.

We lived in a country setting, idyllic, for nature study and I didn’t have to think too hard about it or try at all-I just bought a bunch of field guides, a journal for each, watercolor pencils and we had a good time. Now, however, we have moved into a suburb and I am going to have to be intentional. I am not sure how to do this! 🙂

I stink at making nature study happen. I think it’s because I don’t love it. But I really do love to spend time outdoors observing. I juat find it impossible to do with my kids around making a ruckus, wanting snacks or a bathroom…

We haven’t officially started nature study yet, but my favorite nature-y moment with my four year old was when he watched (and helped) us plant some grass seed in our yard. Right after we finished, a cloud opened up and drenched the ground. The storm passed quickly, and my four year old looked out the window expectantly, because he know the water would feed the grass. He was so perplexed that the grass hadn’t grown yet, less than two hours later!

My boys love to simply lie in the grass, simply watching the tiny kingdom of insect life go about its business. Being at eye level is captivating, and what they see makes its way into their artwork, story-telling, and playtime.

My favourite nature study memory is a particular nature walk our family went on, exploring a bit off the trail and discovering bird’s eggs, snakes, and beautiful wildflowers.
I’ve been curious about Exploring Nature with Children since I first saw it a few months ago, and was wondering how it would work in a co-op type setting. I’d love to win and and give it a try with our group!

I love being outside and immersed in nature. It played a major role in drawing me into a knowledge of who God is. The sheer scope and beauty of His creation, from the tiniest particles to the greatest sweeping vistas, it seems impossible not to acknowledge the Architect of it all. I’m looking forward to spending more time with nature studies in the next few years.

I just stumbled upon this blog as I was looking into the “Exploring Nature with Children” guidebook. I love this idea as nature study has been special to me since I was a kid. Now with my own kids, we enjoy doing nature scavenger hunts together on hikes or camping. The hunts can be varied and include colors, sounds, textures, different sizes and many opportunities to use our imaginations!
